Bulimba SS received the Queensland Government Premiers Sustainability Award in 2013
Biscoe Wilson was commissioned to design and document three General Learning Areas and a Multi-purpose Hall as part of the Building the Education Revolution (BER) Program.
The Bulimba State School BER Hall is an exemplar for the BER hall typology as it is a true environmentally sustainable, multi-use building that makes use of a steep section of site. The siting of the building plays an important role in the masterplanning. We are developing links between the older section of the school on "the hill" with the western playing fields. The spaces between this and surrounding buildings will be used for recreation, storage and for growing food that children either cook at school or take home.
Although the building meets all the functional requirements of the "template" BER hall design it surpasses the mandatory requirements in many ways.
The building incorporates a multi- purpose hall which can be used for school and community purposes. On the hall level there are amenities, storage areas for furniture and equipment and a teaching kitchen. The kitchen contains five workstations and is part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Programme. Children grow edible food on the site and harvest the produce which is then prepared in the kitchen and eaten in the class groups. As the kitchen is adjacent the hall it can be used to cater for functions within the hall. Biscoe Wilson designed and donated the timber "Harvest Table" in the kitchen and commissioned local artist cabinetmaker, Matt Dixon to craft the table.
Below the hall are three general learning classrooms which connect to the landscape and future garden areas. The western wall has been designed to incorporate "green wall" potential and roof water is harvested in tanks below the classroom level.
