Entry in AIA Brisbane Awards Programme 2012
Biscoe Wilson Architects was commissioned to design and document four General Learning Areas (GLA) and an Administration Building as part of the Building the Education Revolution Program. To enable expansion of teaching spaces it was necessary to demolish an existing administration building to make space for a new three level multi-purpose administration block and teaching centre. This is an innovative design which cantilevers over an adjacent covered games court to maximize upper level floor plates on a tight footprint. The building has been designed with high ceilings and excellent cross ventilation to maximize environmental comfort. Levels have been tied to existing buildings to enable improved circulation and to provide enhanced disabled access.
Architectural forms and material choices in the new building respect the abutting historical 20th century buildings. The cantilevering upper level and east facing facade elements provide a colourful and more lyrical intervention.
Nine small classrooms in an adjacent existing building were refurbished to make six large classrooms incorporating current technology requirements.
Biscoe Wilson Architects specialise in innovative, value adding solutions to education architecture.
