Biscoe Wilson Architects were engaged by Project Services to investigate siting and master planning options for additional classroom accommodation at Bulimba State School. The steep site had little available level land for play activities for children. A sloping section of north facing site was recommended and chosen for a new building. The 10 classroom block incorporated an undercroft / amphitheatre and was designed to step down the site and respond to an existing spine circulation path linking the existing school at the top of the hill with playing fields below. By aligning levels with existing cross connections the access to the six level building is easy and flexible. A linear north facing plan is solar efficient and promotes cross ventilation. Water harvesting and other environmental sustainable design initiatives are used as a learning aid for students. The building was opened by the then Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd in 2008.
