A German pharmaceutical company, Boehringher Ingelheim has developed a farm near Kingaroy in Queensland, for growing a crop used in the manufacture of a drug used in eye surgery. Our office was commissioned to design two buildings for the rural property. One to contain a laboratory and offices for the business and testing side of the operation. The second building was for accommodation of staff. Biscoe Wilson Architects liaised with the German company regarding particulars of the laboratory fitout.
A simple pole structure was selected for its ease of construction, structural grid regularity, robustness and contextual design. The buildings were elevated 3metres on hardwood poles, to provide flood proofing and useful utility space below. The upper floor plan was a linear design split by a breezeway, to aid ventilation and to provide a dust lobby and breakout space.
